Did Libya Really Come To the End of Gaddafi's Dictatorship?

Last week was a great week for Libya. It was a weekend full of partying, joy, sparked up hope and most importantly a day that declared a chance of reform. Gaddafi's 41 years and 363 days as the autocracy (meaning a person given unlimited power over a nation) has finally come to an end.

Someone needs a bit of coffee...
The rebel fighters fought fierecely through the country's capital, Tripoli, on Friday night. Almost all of the pro Gaddafi fighters had somehow exasperated out of thin air, perhaps seeking shelters for themselves after seeing what has happened. Muammar Gaddafi on the other hand had gone into hiding along with his family. To put a end to Gaddafi once and for all, a wealthy Libyan businessman has offered a million euros for Gaddafi, dead or alive, that's around one million four hundred thirteen thousand and twenty three hundred (1,413,023,000)! It's definitely not a small number in any case at all.

Pure gold mermaid sofa taken from Aisha Gaddafi's home

The family possesses bad reputation. All of Gaddafi's sons and daughters have been living luxurious lives while the country suffered from poverty. Their beautiful compounds filled with gigantic swimming pools, expensive wineries and modern, breathtaking mansions. As compared to the lifestyles of most Lybians, you could truly only divide them into two categories, heaven and hell.

One of Gaddafi's daughter-in-law abused her Ethiopian nanny just because she had refused to beat her children when they were restless. As a result, Aline Skaf (former model) poured boiling water over the nanny's head as a punishment, then isolated her in a room so no one was able to reach or help her. Out of sympathy, a guard offered to help but later on Skaf found out and threatened to do the same if he dared again.

What a horrifying family, I'm happy for the nation that such a dictator has finally fallen.

CNE: The Ex!

So I checked out The Ex this week, it's a once-a-year event held in the Canadian National Exhibit centre. It runs from August 19th to the 5th of September. Here are some events that I encounter while roaming around:

The entrance area. It looks like a carnival doesn't it? ( The qualities of these photos are not the best because they were taken on my phone camera. )
The thrill rides are extremely over priced, six something - a bit more and less of Canadian dollars for 30 seconds of  your life. If you really want to go somewhere where various roller coasters dominate the landscape, go to Canada's Wonderland!
Excuse my bad photo taking skills, the background was suppose to say "Hairspray" but instead it says "Airspray". I'm quite talented at creating random transformations of perfectly normal things, aren't I? It was a Ice Skating Show featuring Canada's own 2010 Bronze medalist Joannie Rochette.
More of my wonderful photography

The grand opening of the show, everybody grooved along with the popular party song of We Will Rock You - Queen.
A peak of the star's arrival on the ice!
Trippy ? I think so. Does anyone know what these are called? I think they're meant to be kept on the balcony.
Sand sculptures!
A stone sculpture. They are created by finding the balancing point of each rock. Anyone else see that face on the top of the rock? I thought it kind of looked like an alien, therefore I added a space effect.
Fantastic smelling flowers, the store said "All natural", but the flowers themselves smelled a bit processed.

A fancy dressed English man in our 21 century. I guess the vintage look is really coming back hard and fast.
Beautiful colored lamps, I would love to have one in my room.
Super dog show, what is so great about it is that 40% of the dogs in the show are adopted from the Humane Society and animal shelters.

But during the visit I found that there were so literally tons of companies of all sizes, big and small, advertising their products. The irony in this is that we were paying to go there. In a sense, are we paying for advertisements?

All in all, it was a great experience, I hope those of you who can go will go visit before the annual event pulls its curtains on the 5th of September

Is 2012 Real?

Is the world coming to an end? We'll soon to find out as the designated day approaches, but I have deep doubts about it. Just like many other apocalypses and predictions that predicted the world to come to an end, it never did yet.

Two days ago I experienced my first earthquake of 5.8 while I was sitting cross legged on my desk typing away when I suddenly felt my desk sway while the plastic blinds in front of me flew back and forth uncontrollably. At first, I thought it was just myself being on the computer for too long and started having illusions. But the Earthquake statuses on Facebook confirmed that I wasn't just day dreaming about it. That quake shook me to reality, I should be living my life and even if I do die in 2012, die with no regrets.

Could 2012 be real? The Mayan calendar showed so, but maybe the Mayans could just have been too tired and exhausted to continue their now world famous calendar.

Well, whether it's true or not, we'll just have to see. Live in the moment and not in the past or the future.

Remember Jack Layton

Jack Layton passed away on early Monday morning at age 61. He was   surrounded by his loved ones, including his Hong Kong born wife, Olivia, and his two children from the previous marriage. Layton is one of the most known politicians in Canada, who had led the now opposition party of Canada, New Democratic Party to it's station which had long been possessed by the Liberals.

The old NDP leader retired only last month to treat and recover from the prostate cancer that was diagnosed in February 2010. But was later misdiagnosed and confirmed as non-prostate cancer.

The flag on top of Parliament Hill in the Country's capital, Ottawa, was lowered half mast . Prime Minister Stephen Harper also paid tribute to the politician.

Jack Layton had big hopes for this country, as he called it one of the most hopeful countries in the world. We will remember how he dedicated the last moments of his life running the election in May to lead his party to a place it hasn't been before. His death brings a nation's grief. We will always remember him as an activist in our community, and someone that made great contributions in making our country a better place.

Turn Left, Turn Right

A while ago, my friend Catherine showed me a little lovely book by a Taiwanese author, named Jimmy Liao.

Inside unfolded a tragic but beautiful love story. Here's my translation of it:

*Note: read the story first so you have a general idea of the story

The grey sky always befell during the autumn, in a city of dread, a girl and a boy lived together in an apartment with a wall in between as a divider. Whenever they went out, he always turned left, and she always turn right habitually. Therefore, they had never met or been acknowledged the presence of each other on this Earth. Winter slowly descended upon the city as days passed. On those days, the boy would sit in the snow covered park to play his violin and feed the wondering pigeons. The girl would roam around on the streets, and occasionally talk to strayed cats for comfort. After a long day, she always turned right to go home, and he always turned left. So, they never met.

One day, they met at a park, like old friends, they talked and talked and talked. Until it started to pour. She gave him her phone number and left. Him, turning left and her, turning right.

That stormy night, they were too excited to fall asleep, the image of them together in the park replied again and again their heads.

The next day, the girl stayed home on her couch, huddling around the phone waiting for the phone call. The boy, sat against his couch against the wall that divided them two and dialed again and again, trying to make out the numbers that was smudged by the rain.

Another year passed,  while playing violin in the subway, the music brought out his thoughts, Is she still here, here in this city? Or is she long gone by now? But they met the same strayed cat, the same lost puppy and wake up everyday to the weak shining sun and heard the same quacking crow.

After enduring the miserable time here, he decided to leave this gloomy city to find another place filled with sunshine. She did too, but at the apartment door, he always turned left and she was turned right, leaving behind a city of darkness and memories of each other.

This story reminded me that we should cherish everyone/thing that we possess because you'll never know if when we're going to lose it, like the girl and boy in the story. Chance fooled them, created sparks in their hearts and then put it out with ice cold water that destroyed all signs of hope. This is what I feel about living, catch it by the tail to prevent it from slipping away, it could be an opportunity, a person's feelings or even an apology that you know you have to make. The decisions that we make also largely impacts our lives. If only one of them decided to change their directions, they would've been living happily in that gloomy city. I hope I will be much luckier than the boy and girl, or at least I will try my best not to be.

With a Pen and Paper

There are times where other than a dog, pen and paper are your best friend. Sure, the technology is advanced, you could do practically anything on your laptop or computer, but what I do to truly express my feelings on is a piece of paper and a good pen.

I encounter many moments where after a long day, I just want to slip into my covers and write. Write about things that come to my mind, things that I secretly care about, things that I wish had changed. I just let my mind roam with no specific targets to meet. It might not even come out in complete sentences. Scribbles, sketches, whatever it takes, and then hide them into a place where no one will ever look for.

Mosquito 101

Mosquitoes. Little sneaky, blood sucking creatures that descend when summer arrives. I'm sure everyone has been bitten by these pests before, but how serious is the problem?

Malaria is a major disease responsible for 225 millions of cases worldwide, though most of these victims are in Africa. In decades, man kind has been fighting to defeat this parasite.

First, a little explanation of how malaria is transmitted. It all begins when a female mosquito bites into a human's skin. While sucking out the blood it transfers its young, called sporozoites, which then live in the liver until it's ready to produce asexually (producing only in one sex, in this case, females). It then advances to the next stage of merozoites, and travels out of the liver and invades healthy cells, and overtake them for further reproduction of dividing. When it has matured, it will continue the cycle and bite its next victim.

This problem is the most serious and common in Africa, that's why organizations have worked hard to prevent this from occurring. Nets sprayed with insecticide has cut off the infection rate by half, since being distributed a few years ago.

Unfortunately, during this period, mosquitoes have also developed immunity to the pesticide Deltametrin , the percentage has risen from the previous 8% to an astonishing 48%.

Also, after a period of  protection from the parasite, when exposed again, the human immune system weakens, and the parasite comes back harder than ever.

What lies ahead about the malaria control in Africa? Hopefully, better prevention methods. But only time will tell.

All United as One

This video blew me away. My body was literally trembling with goosebumps when I watched it. Words couldn't have described what I felt. Astonished, amazed, stunned are some words that piled up on and on as the four minutes and twenty nine seconds played on. This was the first time I had experienced what they often described as "Pictures (Or videos in this case) are worth a thousand words." I don't believe I have ever been this touched for a very, very long time.

This YouTube viral video of Matt Harding dancing, a man who has the passion for travelling, experiencing different cultures, people and their customs. I envy him for having the ability and determination to travel to more than 42 countries in a year and two months!

It's amazing how the people featured in this video was willing to join in and celebrate with Matt for something as silly as this. Seeing our world united under one for a few minutes of dancing. For a moment, forgetting about all of the wars, hunger, poverty, and just dance and laugh. The children, adults, teenagers, elders, ones who wanted to dance, ones who didn't but was dragged by their friends anyway and the different colored faces, the exotic costumes gave us a broader view of how big our planet really is, it also showed us that the human nature is inviting.

All their smiling faces and laughter brought a even bigger smile to my face. It gave me the idea that a bad day can always be made for the better. There are so many things we have not tried, and to stay positive and look forward to the brighter tomorrow that lies ahead.

I hope this video inspires you just as much, or more, as it have for me.

YouTube Stars are RICH!

As we become more and more viral today, we do absolutely everything on the computer. Ranging from watching TV shows, listening to music, Googling directions and going on social networks such as Facebook,Twitter and Tumblr. Technology, especially laptops, computers are becoming inseparable in younger generations. One of those fast-growing websites is YouTube. As most of us know, YouTube has YouTube Partners, and together they make money off advertisements before their video is displaced, and also on their profiles. It is split 50/50, which is a very decent income and achievement for the partners, I'd think.

All of these YouTube phenomenals make more than 100,000 dollars a year! Wow, I was absolutely bewildered, that's a heck lot of money for just making minute(s)-long videos! To say the least, it's at least $8,300 a month!

Vanilla Yogurt Anyone?

So today, I was dying of hunger at lunch time because I hadn't ate anything since 9 in the morning. Lemme tell you, I was s-t-a-r-v-i-n-g. Well, not literally. But I was very hungry. So I decided to pop my head in my fridge and see what's good to eat, and also that takes no effort to make. That's usually what I'm looking for when I open the fridge. I saw Danone's Silhouette yogurt, a mysterious name right? ( Or not.) So I went right ahead and grabbed the pack, I absolutely despise vanilla yogurt, unfortunately I opened up the wrong one...

How vanilla yogurt looks like in my head

Right when I was about to stick it back into the fridge, my mom's evil figure appeared at the kitchen doorway. "You opened that, now you gotta eat it." She said with a wicked sneer. ( That's what she sounded like in my head, at least). So now I'm here typing this, as I eat this disgusting, vomit-like vanilla yogurt. But don't get me wrong, I like the vanilla flavor, just not vanilla mixed with yogurt...

What's your favorite flavor of yogurt? Well, mine's not vanilla!

Any Sparks of Hope for Somalia?

So to begin, I'd like to ask you what you did today, on this hot summer day (the weather that's in Canada, that is). If you are still a student, I'd be guessing you probably went to camp, or just came back from a vacation,  maybe stayed at home and mingled on YouTube, Facebook and Tumblr, better yet went out to do some volunteer work? If you are an older audience, I'd think you probably had a long day of work, engaging in activities that hopefully provides for your family, or maybe just yourself. But during this time I'm assuming you could had easy access to a sip of water, or a bite of a cream filled bagel here or there.

Meanwhile in Somalia, there is a devastating disaster at work. Somalia had been hit hard with drought. The residents hasn't seen rain in an extremely long period of time. As many of us know Somalia is a developing country, people there usually make a living out of small trades of farm goods. Without rain, there would be no harvest, there would be no food to trade, therefore no food to eat.

Many of the country's people have fled, walking to neighboring countries like Ethiopia, in search of food. You might as well call this a hunger journey. Many families walk up to 30 days to cross borders with the little possessions that they have. Unfortunately, at the bordering areas, they're usually robbed clean by thugs and thieves.

One mother had walked with her three children on a voyage to a refugee camp, on the way, her youngest and smallest child died, but she did not even have the energy to properly dig a grave for him - his body was left to rot in the hot day. When asked why, she replied that she must ensure that her other two children must reach safety.

In these camps, people well over thousands are concentrated over a small area, which makes the spreading of diseases such as measles and whooping cough faster than ever.  International organizations have lent helping hands in the area, but recently the Al-Shabaab, a organization led by Al-Qaeda said that western countries are taking this opportunity to kill their citizens, which I find absolutely absurd. Whatever the real reason behind their decision is, it is still a brutal and cruel one.

When Will the Tears Stop Falling

On August 6th of 2011, a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) CH-47 Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan  was attacked by the Taliban. It is recognized as the single most deadliest attack in the United States since the States joined the war in 2001. 30 American military soldiers were dead, as well as 8 Afghans.

Among of the soldiers who had passed away,  the Army Chief Warrant Officer, Bryan Nicols, did as well.

A child of only ten years old, Brayden Nichols, the son of Bryan Nichols wrote an iReport on his father. He wanted the world to remember that his father was a brave, extraordinary man, not just another soldier that had passed away.

The old and the young, people around the country swarm in and left their best wishes, advice and most important of all, their respect for Bryan Nicols.

Over the years, many countless soldiers from different countries have died in an effort to restore a peaceful living in Afghanistan, countries like United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada (up until January, 2011). Thousands of lives have been lost in attacks like this over the ten year period. Even more hearts have been broken from the loss of a son, daughter, father, mother, husband, wife, brother and sister.

Sometimes I wonder is this even worth it, before you go ahead and call me selfish, stupid, I'm not saying for them to give up, because that would not be fair to those who are suffering in Afghanistan. But think about it like this, maybe, just maybe reach an agreement with the Taliban, and decide on military power, nation's economy, split up between the Taliban and the rest of the contributing world in the battle. Countries could give support to the country, and potentially help it become stable later.

You. Yeah You, Go On Exploring, Don't Stop

I tried to reorganize my chaotic closest today. It contained many strange objects ranging from a five cent coin to a Tommy Hilfiger sock to a empty Nestle water bottle. Anyways, you get the idea, it was a disastrous sight. While I was flipping through my grade five worksheets consisting of how the hierarchy of the Canadian government, I found these lovely items that brought back memories like a everlasting flood.

In this treasure box that my friend had give to me in grade 4, I stored coins that my dad had brought back from his trip to different countries, though they were mainly in Europe.Gawking at these beautiful and exotic coins, they made me wonder, what is it like there? The three countries that I'd love to visit the most are Greece, France and Italy.

This necklace was a friendship necklace that we had purchased from Aldo, for Angela, Esther, Grace and I. To this day, I still wear it a lot, and this reminds me of our best-friendship.

These medals are from mostly for athletics and academics. I  keep them safely in my disastrous closet. They remind me of how hard our team had fought, or how much work we had put into to deserve these medals.

To some people, money, cars, houses are everything. To me, sure, they're important. But aside from family and friends what the most important thing of all to me are memories that were made. Whether it's happy or sad, it never fails to bring a smile to my face.

Harry Potter Series - It Marks the End of Our Childhood?

I have had the privilege to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in IMAX and 3D the other day. It was a great experience, the sound system, the 3D effects, but one thing was not as fascinating as I expected...the display was not your usual IMAX dome, but just rather about 1/3 bigger than a normal movie screen. Though it felt like a deja-vu since I had read the last book already, and knew about the outcome of the battle and Harry's fate, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Out of the three kinds of different theatres, IMAX would be my #1 choice, the audio, visual and special effects just really come together...well, at least I think so.

Watching it also made me feel old, feel grown-up. I remember watching the first of the series in grade three at a lunch break because it was snowing outside. The library was dark, everyone huddled around a thick, old fashioned television, our heads without our notice inched closer and closer to the vintage screen. The scene where the Dursley residence was under attack by owl letters deeply captured my attention, and I knew from then that I would become a hard-core fan.

YAY for the extra large picture! (:
Oh the days when little Harry was still so cute and cuddly
But with the years following, one after another, the Harry Potter made appearance in theaters all over the world, each time getting more recognition, fame but also negativity. Despite what many say about the series, I think it has helped me grow in various ways, learn about love, hate, courage, family, and so much more. I think it does indeed mark the end of our childhood, but also is the start of a new age, where we become more
responsible and understanding.

Forever Unequal?

A while ago, I read that the rate of increasing day-old female corpses having been steadily rising in Pakistan - a country in poverty. I had been wondering why this was occurring. Why are we throwing our baby girls away? They grew from a mother's body, inside her womb for nine months, and eventually came into this world. Children itself are a wonderful miracle. Then, there are also many that cannot conceive, who have prayed and dreamed of having their own children that were never granted. Why are these people abusing these privileges and going on to destroy their little loved ones.

The reason was clear. There is still the "Boy-is-better-than-girl" thinking. Many countries in Asia and the Middle East acquire dowry with the marriage of their daughters. That itself maybe extremely frustrating for a country in poverty who cannot even afford to feed themselves.

Another influence would be that many of the girls still cannot access education. They're meant to be housewives who stay at home to care for their children, cook and sew. Therefore relying on their husbands for financial support. That makes a woman vulnerable, having to follow exactly what her husband demands, or else her and her children would not be able to survive. Since they have no education, getting a job is just a dream.

But a non governmental agencies are trying to stop this tragedy by placing baby cribs outside their offices. These girl infants will be put up to adoption. As for the babies that have been too unfortunate to stay in this world, I hope they find a better haven where they will be fortunate to have a better life.

"Paint the cut with iodine"

Today I decided to take a rare break from my endless internet usage ( composing of mostly Facebook, MSN, and dramas -__-) to go on my 15th floor balcony to enjoy the seasonal scenery primarily consisting of trees, houses, and more trees. PS. I heard the color green is apparently good for your eyes, just like carrots.

Outside my balcony

So on my balcony I was reading a short story called, "The Sound Machine" by Ronald Dahl that I had picked up from my desk.

The story was about a seemingly maniac named Klausner. He was obsessed with the exploration of different tunes and sounds, and he was confident that many, many extremely high pitched sounds and low pitched sounds that humans could not hear still existed among us. Therefore, he set out in search for it, building ultimately his own Sound Machine.

The Sound Machine later on led the protagonist to hear a sharp, desperate, yet toneless scream from clipping a rose stem. He imagined what that would've been like if instead of a rose stem, a human arm took its place. He thought he heard the rose scream out in pain, and decided to test his theory out with a bigger living organism. A tree. Klausner transferred his machine to a park nearby early next morning and used an ax to drive it into its trunks. Guess what happened ? Of course, a louder, more deafening moan came. Terrified and surprised by this finding, he immediately dialed up the doctor and pleaded for him to come as soon as possible. But, well, when the doctor arrived, Klausner insisted him to listen to what he had heard as a terrifying scream. He dove his ax once again into the bare flesh of the tree. Timberrrrr, the tree came crashing down. The doctor said did not hear or notice any similar noise at all and thought this to be a waste of his time. Klausner had just realized what he had done and demanded the doctor to paint the two cuts of the tree with iodine. As what we humans would do to cuts so it does not get infected and speeds up the healing process.

Ronald wanted us to remember that we are not the only living species on this Earth, but rather we share it with  so many others. If we took the importance of  the lives of other organisms just as much as we valued ours, then we would think twice. Better yet three times to consider why we need this resource, and how we will sustain it by either re-planting before we cut them down. Like the fate of the rain forests in Brazil, Indonesia, even if the damage is already done, we should at least paint it the cut with iodine.

Bold Nails

My friend Susan is an exceptionally talented art student. Despite those expensive Sally Hansen Nail Strips that have been so popular among teens, she decided to make her own. Adding creativity without getting pricey. Here are two examples of her work, the one with the light green leopard print is what she has done on my nails. Unfortunately, the quality was ruined because I had smudged it while it was drying, the other one with the purple background and zebra prints are hers:

Hope you guys like the look, you can recreate your own unique look by simply following these simple steps, sponsored by Susan's old wisdom

Step 1. Paint a desired color as your base, like the green or the purple above, or another color you want. Paint at least two layers to create a clear background for the pattern to be set out on. Let dry

Step 2. Take a black gel pen, any kind, even the kind that you write with and create the pattern that you want, you can also create this look with other colored gel pens. Wait about 15 minutes

Step 3. Apply topcoat twice and wait till that dries.

Step 4. Admire and enjoy!

(Above content contributed by Susan, whom I steal lunch from. I apologize)

- Zzzzzzzz - Palm Print Accepted

A New York City hospital has decided to take up a new kind of technology, palm reading. No,no, it's not the kind of fortune palm reading where a suspicious woman pretending to be psychic but looks utterly drunk, who then circles a crystal ball and tells you absolutely gibberish. It's the kind of palm reading that will take the place of filling out forms and finding identification cards.

That's right, for emergencies, even if you're unconscious and zoom, you're off. This kind of technology could potentially save thousands of lives in the future. Over 25,000 patients have already been registered for the service. What the future holds for this technology should be bright.

Mad Man Causes Heart Breaks in Norway

As many of us have heard either from our friend, neighbors, or from the news that a terrible bombing and shooting accident happened in Oslo and Utoeya Island in Norway on Friday, July 22nd, 2011. This tragedy had at least 87 dead victims while many others were injured. The man behind the incident is a native Norwegian man named Anders Behring Breivik.  The gunner appears to have blonde hair, accompanied by a pair of green eyes and a height of 6 feet.

( Taken from Telegraph, UK)

Now, why would the 32 year old attempt and plan this insane attack? What's his motive? Why is he even willing to sacrifice his own life for it? The reason behind it is simple. He wanted to warn people of Europe to discontinue the practice of allowing multiculturalism as well as Muslim immigrants to come into the country. He first became motivated to execute and do something about it when he was around 16 or 17 years old.

(Taken from Telegraph, UK)

He is simply a madman. He had even written more than 1,500 pages of a book, in the format of questionnaire, where he decides on the questions and asks it and then answers it himself. Here's one of the questions he has answered:

What would you say to your European brothers and sisters?
Know that you are not alone in this fight. We have tens of millions of European sympathizers and tens of thousands of brothers and sisters who support us fully and are willing to fight beside us. Hopefully I will be able to help and inspire others. Build your network on Facebook. Follow the guidelines in this book and you will succeed!

( Taken from http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2084895,00.html?hpt=hp_t2 )

But as stated in other questionnaires, he simply states that he does not hate Muslims, he just despises their existence in Europe, and want them to go back to "where they came from. He also asks others like him to join his pursuit of restoring Europe's original purity.
(Taken from Telegraph, UK)

My own opinion is that why is he willing to destroy and cause mayhem in his own country where many innocent victims are then hurt. My ideology is that multiculturalism is great, it allows the country to become stronger, both financially and physically, it also allows the country to experience different cultures, food. It brings economic wealth and the government benefits from tax money and other governmental exercises. For me, this was simply unacceptable and crazy. This way of thinking is flawed and down right dangerous. I hope this accident is a reminder for those who possess this kind of ideology and turn it back around before it reaches disaster.
(Taken from CNN, USA)
In the end, we pray for those ones who are in heaven and also those who has lost loved ones.

Do you think what he did was necessary or was it just brutal? Leave me a comment. Thank you (:
